History

Since 2005

Themos Mexis has returned to full time composition and is concentrating on cataloguing, recording and publishing his music .

 

 

2001 – 2004

Formed The Mexis Big Band, performing at various municipalities in Rhodes, Greece.

In September, 2001, The Mexis Big Band performs on ET3 (The National Hellenic Television,Thessaloniki) for the program 'Nostos'.

 

 

2000

Winner of four Music Awards at the "Song Expo", The Netherlands; his compositions; 'El Conflicto' and 'Mother's Lament' win Best Instrumental; 'Ode to Freedom' wins Best Theme Song for a New Millennium; and 'El Conflicto' as Best Entry (Greece).

December- 'Mexis in Concert 2000'(IX) at National Theatre, Rhodes, with 13 piece orchestra, large mixed choir and soloists, Xanthippi Karathanasi and George Vendouris. All music composed, arranged and conducted by Themos Mexis.     

 

 

1999

Appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of The Rhodian Philharmonic Band, Rodos, Greece His composition, 'On Dreamtime Wings' wins Best Song Entry (Greece)at the "Song Expo", The Netherlands.

 

 

1998

Winner of the "Euroaward" 1998 for Music - in the category of 'Artistic Creation and Performance', at Trieste, Italy.

'The Sousta' wins Best Instrumental (Classical); and 'The Bridge' for Best Entry(Greece), at the "Song Expo", The Netherlands.

The introduction from 'Evening Song'- is chosen for the national TV and Radio advertising campaign for this year's Olympic Arts Festival- 'A Sea Change', in Sydney, Australia.

July - in Cyprus for the Amathusa Festival (in the ancient theatre of Amathusia) - conducting the Leandros Sytaros Choir.

September - one of the four facilitators for 'Twang' - a project of 'A Sea Change', at the Australian Museum.- 'Proteus'- A Carnivale Event - a fortnight of exhibitions by contemporary visual, performance and literary artists at the ASN Gallery, The Rocks. Themos Mexis performs with his ensemble and choir. - 'Gracias A La Vida' a Carnivale and 'A Sea Change' Event. Themos Mexis conducts the Mexis Choir in a combined choirs' concert.- 'Themos Mexis at Government House'- A Carnivale Event and an Historic Houses and Sydney Symphony collaboration. Themos Mexis, with three SSO musicians perform music by Mexis, featuring also vocalist Sandy Constantopedos.

October - 'The Five Rings Concert (Europe)'- a Carnivale and 'A Sea Change' event, Darling Harbour, Sydney. Themos Mexis performs with his ensemble and choir.

 

 

1997

'Mexis in Concert '97'(VIII)- conducts the SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra, The Mexis Choir and a number of soloists, in an all Mexis music programme, for Carnivale '97.

Directs the Mexis Ensemble and Choir in a series of performances throughout the year at Sydney Town Hall, Le Beach Hut and St. Nektarios Burwood Hall, Sydney.

 

 

1995-1996

Performs a series of concerts to commemorate Greek composer, Manos Hadjidakis on the anniversary of his death, in Sydney at Le Beach Hut and The Enmore Theatre, Sydney; and in Canberra, at The Greek Embassy and The Hellenic Club.

Invited by The U.N. Secretariat of 'The Year of Tolerance' and the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. N. Bolkus to conduct The Mexis Ensemble and Choir, at the Refectory, Sydney Univ. for visiting Greek Composer Mikis Theodorakis. The Mexis Choir invited to perform at the opening of 'Carnivale '96', Darling Harbour; also at the Carnivale Fringe, Pioneer Park.

Invited by The National Maritime Museum to perform with the Mexis Choir in the 'Thalassa- Sea The World' program.

The Mexis Choir also performs at the Cyprian Community Club, The Greek Orthodox Community Centre, and to commemorate the 'UN Day For Human Rights', at the Centrepoint Convention Centre, Sydney.

 

 

1990-1994

Elected committee member, then president (for 2 years) of MAGA(Musical Arrangers' Guild of Australia), NSW-Composed, arranged and conducted music for documentary 'To The Island', directed by Lex Marinos; produced by Brian Beaton and Reel Images Productions, WA.

Composed music for musical theatre, 'The Lyre of Old Man Nikolas' by playwright Dimitris Kocos, for Theatro Technis, Australia

 

 

1987-1988

'The Mexis Show Band' toured NSW.

Invited by The Antipodes Festival, Melbourne, as a guest adjudicator for The Greek Song Festival.

Composed, arranged and conducted music for television documentary on puppetry - 'Rods, Strings, Shadows and Gloves', directed by Lex Marinos, for SBS Television.

Commissioned by Barbara Chobocky and Witch Hunt Productions to compose, arrange and conduct music (symphonic orchestra) for the tele-documentary feature, 'Witch Hunt' for SBS Television, directed by Barbara Chobocky.

 

 

1985-1986

Invited by the Melbourne Greek Festival Week to perform 'Mexis in Concert '85'(VII) at the Dallas Brookes Hall, conducting The Melbourne Pops Orchestra. Repeat Performance of the above concert at the Sydney Town Hall, December 1985, presented by MGL productions. Commissioned by the Hellenic Theatrical Group to compose and direct music for their production of Garcia Lorca's, 'The Cobbler's Wife'.

 

 

1983-1984

Guest conductor with The Kuring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra in a series of performances at the Macquarie University Theatre- playing Andre Previn's 'EGBDF', a play for actors and orchestra, by Tom Stoppard.

Arranged and conducted music for The Adelaide Greek Song Festival.

Formed The Mexis School of Music, Sydney.

Musical Director and arranger of the Mexis Show Band (since 1981), backing local and overseas artists, such as Paschalis, Dakis, Bessi Argiraki, Phillip Nicolaou, touring Australia.

Commissioned by the 0/28 (SBS) Network to compose, arrange and conduct music  for topical programme- 'Lineup 28', for tele-drama series - 'City West', conducting a 50 piece orchestra.

Commissioned by the Hellenic Drama Society to arrange and direct music for their production of 'Song of The Dead Brother' by Mikis Theodorakis.

Commissioned by OFSE (Combined Greek Associations) with assistance from the Music Board of The Australia Council to complete the 'Oratorio'.

Invited to adjudicate at the Melbourne Greek Song Festival.

 

 

1981-1982

Commissioned by H.M. Productions to arrange and conduct music for tele-variety show- 'Play Bouzouki' for the 0/28 Network.

Commissioned by the 0/28 Network to produce a 30 minute special on his music -'Mexis and Friends'- featuring The One Extra Dance Company, produced by Art Mayer Productions.

Invited by The Kuring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra to conduct concerts at the Macquarie Centre, in a program of Greig, Dvorak, Massinet, Albinoni, Holst and Mexis.

 

 

1979-1980

'Composer's Grant' awarded by the Music Board of the Australia Council.

Performed 'Mexis in Concert IV' at the invitation of The Adelaide Festival Trust, for the Adelaide Festival and Glendi, March 1979, conducted The Adelaide Festival Orchestra.

Composed, arranged and conducted the music for a theatrical short film 'Dragon on the Roof' an Art Mayer and Comalco Production.

'Mexis in Concert V' at the Dallas Brookes Hall, Melbourne, conducting the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra.

(September 1979, left for New York and Europe.) 1980, conducted The Greek Radio and Television Orchestra in a special programme - 'Themos Mexis and his Music'.

Taught at the National Conservatorium in Athens.

Pianist with the Aliki Vouyouklaki Theatre, in the 'Merry Widow'.

Musical Director with the Kostas Prekas Theatre Co.

Commissioned by the Rodian Theatrical Society to perform 'Mexis in Concert VI'.

Returned to Sydney, December 1980.

 

 

1977-1978

Composed, arranged and conducted all music for 'So What'- a theatrical short film by Art Mayer Productions and Qantas.

Awarded a "Composer's Grant" by the Community Arts Board of the Australia Council, 1977.

'Mexis in Concert II'- an all Mexis program, for Carnivale '77 at the music for the tele-variety series- 'A Greek Affair'.

 

 

1975-1976

Created the 'Mexis Ensemble', performing at The Australia Music Centre, The Sydney University, The Sydney Town Hall and The Horden Pavilion.

'Mexis In Concert I' 1976 - composed, arranged and conducted30 member orchestra and 20 member mixed choir, with soloist from Rhodes, Greece, Stavros Hartofilis at Sydney Town Hall.

Composed, arranged and conducted all music for 'Canoe'- a short feature film by Art Mayer Productions and 'Comalco'.

"Composers Award" granted in 1975 by the Conservatorium of NSW to study 'electronic' music.         

 

 

1965 – 1974

Created 'The Orchestra of Greek Music, Rhodes', Greece with soloist, Stavros Hartofilis

Member of the Commercial Bank of Greece Choir, in Athens.

His composition - 'Autumn Times'- finalist in The Thessaloniki Song Festival, 1972.

Formed small ensembles during student years in Athens (1970-72) Student- Sydney, Italy, Greece.
